Liam Morrissey is an Australian cellist, composer, and cello teacher from Townsville, Queensland. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the Australian National University, having studied cello with David Pereira and Julian Smiles and composition with Larry Sitsky and Jim Cotter. He then settled in Canberra, where he founded and directed Playing Around Music, an organization dedicated to showcasing and supporting outstanding local musicians. He was a member of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and principal cellist of the acclaimed Griffyn Ensemble until relocating to Paris in 2010.

Since then, Liam has built a multifaceted career throughout France as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, as well as a member of ensembles spanning a wide range of musical styles. He is the founder of Skoht (Some Kind of Hybrid Thing), an unconventional string trio that brings a fresh perspective to the classical repertoire, combining a distinctly contemporary performance style with soundscapes ranging from trip-hop to trance. Through his solo project, Powercello, Liam continually works on expanding the role of the cello in contemporary music, showcasing the instrument’s remarkable versatility. His compositions are also regularly performed by chamber music ensembles, including Canberra’s Contemporary Music Ensemble.

Alongside his work in classical music, Liam performs and records with numerous jazz projects, collaborating with award-winning artists such as Sally Greenaway and Austin Benjamin. A passionate improviser, he has become a familiar presence on the avant-garde music scenes of both Australia and France, taking part in many innovative artistic ventures. His cello can be heard in stage productions, short-film soundtracks, and audio dramas produced by Radio France.
